In Southern California the sauna, the cold plunge, the rinse, and the place to rest can live outdoors all year. How we plan the four as one room on the pool deck or patio, with the walk, the water, and the power settled before anything is placed.

In [Southern California](https://saunafriend.com/sauna-installation-southern-california) the whole sequence can live outdoors all year: a sauna, a cold plunge, a rinse, and a place to sit between rounds. We plan the four as one room on the pool deck or the patio, and we settle the walk between them, where the water goes, and where the power comes from before anything is placed.

Call it a backyard bathhouse or a home spa. We call it a [recovery room](https://saunafriend.com/pages/recovery-rooms): heat, cold, rinse, rest. Our Villa Park, California build is the photograph on this page: a cube sauna at the edge of a tiled pool. There is no winter freeze here to design around, so the tub, the shower, and the chairs can live where they are used.

## The four parts, in the order they are used

### Heat: the sauna

The sauna goes first, because everything else is measured from its door. It stands on hardscape that is level, sound, and drains away from it, placed where the house can see it, since at night the sauna is often the one lit object in the yard. A [cube sauna](https://saunafriend.com/packages/outdoor-sauna-cube) suits a pool deck; straight walls and a glass front read as a small building beside a modern house.

### Cold: the plunge

The plunge sits where the walk from the hot room is short and the floor drains. It is chilled and filtered, so its equipment needs power and has to stay reachable for draining and seasonal care. The SaunaLife S1N and S2N, the Finnmark SOULCOLD, and the Icetubs tubs are the plunges we place. Which fits which household is in [pairing a cold plunge with a sauna](https://saunafriend.com/blog/pairing-a-cold-plunge-with-a-sauna); all of them are in our [cold plunge buildouts](https://saunafriend.com/packages/cold-plunge).

### Rinse: the shower

A rinse between rounds clears the skin before the next heat. The [SaunaLife R3 outdoor shower](https://saunafriend.com/packages/saunalife-r3-outdoor-shower) stands on its own beside the sauna or the tub and keeps the water outside instead of tracking it through the house. Or the house's own hose bib does the job, if it reaches and the ground under it takes the water.

### Rest: the bench or the chairs

A bench or two chairs in sight of the heat and the water, so the pause between rounds belongs to the room. On a pool deck the loungers are often there already; the question is whether they face the door and the tub and sit in shade. Red light therapy and PEMF belong here too, sourced inside the same buildout and powered as part of the plan.

## How short should the walk between the sauna and the plunge be?

Short enough to take barefoot and wet. We do not publish a distance. On the site walk we stand at the sauna door and pace it to the tub, the shower, and the chairs. The surface matters too: water drips off you, so the walk needs a surface that does not get slick when wet and does not pool. It is also taken after dark, so low lighting along it is part of the electrical plan.

## One plan for the water and the power

Water leaves a plunge over the rim as someone climbs in and all at once when it is drained. On a hardscape yard none of it soaks in where it falls, so it has to be led away from the sauna's base, the house, and the neighbor's wall. We plan one drain path for the tub and the rinse after reading which way the deck already falls. Filling is the other half: a hose bib in reach of the tub, and the R3's water connection, confirmed with the plumbing trade we coordinate.

Power is planned once, the same way. The sauna's heater, the plunge's chiller and filter, the lighting along the walk, and a red light panel at the rest space all need it. Licensed electricians we coordinate as our preferred contractors handle it; they know sauna work, and we hold the schedule so their part is done before the crew arrives.

## Will it fit through the gate and onto the patio?

Most yards here are hardscape: a poured patio, a paver walk, block walls between neighbors. A sauna arrives in crated sections and a plunge tub travels as one piece, and both take the same route from the truck through the side gate. The gate is usually the tightest point, so we measure it at its real opening. The full list is in [fitting a sauna into a narrow Southern California lot](https://saunafriend.com/blog/sauna-narrow-compact-lot-southern-california).

## What changes near the coast?

Metal. A bathhouse puts more of it outdoors: the shower's fittings and the plunge's equipment, on top of the sauna's hinges, screws, and heater surround. Near the coast, salt in the air works on all of it before it works on the wood. We choose hardware for it; the reasons are in [what coastal salt air means for sauna hardware](https://saunafriend.com/blog/coastal-salt-air-sauna-hardware-southern-california). May Gray and June Gloom keep the coast damp for weeks, so the layout leaves air moving around the sauna.

## Privacy, shade, and the afternoon sun

Three more questions are decided on the site walk. Privacy: an outdoor shower is in plain view unless we set it with the neighbors' windows in mind. Shade: a plunge in full afternoon sun works harder to stay cold, so the tub and the chairs want the shaded side of the sauna or an eave; inland, in Temecula or Rancho Cucamonga, this carries more weight than anywhere else we work. Sightlines: the sauna wants to be seen from the house, lit, at night.

## What we handle

- The layout of all four parts, drawn on your site before anything is ordered.
- Site preparation: grade, drainage, the base, and the route through the gate.
- Sourcing, delivery, assembly, and set-up, with the plumbing trade and the licensed electricians coordinated.
- Protection for the exposure, the first burn walked through together, and the years after.

## How to start

Tell us about the pool deck or patio, the gate, and where the sauna would go, and we will tell you plainly where the four parts fit. Better, [have us walk your space](https://saunafriend.com/pages/sanctuary-consultation): we pace the walk, read the drainage, and come back with a layout. Or call 720.780.4400 for a free estimate.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can a sauna, a cold plunge, and an outdoor shower all go on a pool deck?

Yes, where the deck is level, sound, and drains away from the room, and where the gate lets the crates and the tub through. The plunge and the shower add their own water to a deck already built for wet feet, so one drain path for both is planned before either is placed.

### Where does the water from a cold plunge and an outdoor shower go?

Away from the sauna's base, the house, and the neighbor's wall, along one drain path planned for both. A plunge spills over the rim as someone climbs in and is drained for seasonal care; the shower runs every session. The water connection for the R3 and the drain for both are confirmed during the consultation with the plumbing trade we coordinate.

### Can a backyard bathhouse be built in stages?

Yes. Where the site allows, the layout covers the whole room from the start, the sauna, the plunge, the rinse, and the rest space, even when the tub or the shower comes a season later. Planning it once means the drain path and the power are run where the later pieces will stand, so nothing is dug up or moved a second time.
