What a wood-fired sauna stove buildout from us includes, how a room heated by fire differs in use, what the site walk settles, and the Harvia and HUUM stove families we install.

A wood-fired sauna stove buildout from us is the stove, a professionally installed chimney kit, and the sauna stones, matched to the room they will heat. There is no controller and nothing electrical on the stove itself. The route the chimney takes is planned on the site walk, before anything is ordered.

That is the whole list. The rest is what changes when the heat comes from fire.

## How is a wood-fired sauna different to use?

You light it. An electric heater comes on from a controller. A wood stove asks you to build a fire, feed it, and wait with it. The heat builds with the burn, the stones take it up, and the room settles into it.

The room smells faintly of smoke and hot stone. Someone splits and carries the wood, and someone empties the ash. Many members want exactly that. If you are unsure, sit in one before you choose.

The stove, the chimney, and the stones are the whole buildout, which is why the [wood-fired stove buildout](https://saunafriend.com/packages/wood-fired-sauna-stoves) reads shorter than the electric [heater buildouts](https://saunafriend.com/packages/heater) beside it.

## What we look at on the site walk

Four things get settled with the spot in front of us.

**Where the chimney exits.** Through the roof or the wall, on which side, and what it passes on the way. On the [Colorado Front Range](https://saunafriend.com/sauna-installation-denver) we also look at where the roof sheds snow and which way the wind carries smoke.

**Clearances and ventilation.** Every stove carries the maker's specification for how far it stands from the walls and benches and how the room breathes. We set both on site against it and do not publish the figures, because they change with the stove and the room.

**Where the wood is kept.** Dry, close to the door, out of the weather, with a path from the pile to the firebox you will still want to walk in January.

**Which side the fire is fed from.** Most stoves are fed from the front, inside the sauna. Harvia's SL and Duo versions and HUUM's LS versions carry a firebox extension through the wall, so firewood goes in from the next room and the ash stays out of the hot room. Feeding through the wall decides a wall, so it is settled before the room is framed.

## Which stoves do we install?

Thirteen stove families, from Harvia and HUUM, in four shapes.

**Floor stoves.** Harvia's M3, Linear, Pro 20, Pro 26, Pro 36, and 50 are steel boxes on the floor with the stones on top, most with a glass door on the firebox so you see the fire from the bench. The M3 is the compact one and the 50 the large one; the Pro line adds water tank versions and versions fed through the wall.

**The Cilindro pillar.** The [Harvia Cilindro](https://saunafriend.com/packages/harvia-cilindro-wood-sauna-stove) is a round stainless steel pillar with the stones held in an open grid around the firebox. Harvia lists the Cilindro 16 for rooms of 212 to 459 cu. ft. and the Cilindro 20 for 283 to 706 cu. ft. Both hold 264 lbs of stones.

**The Legend series.** The Legend 150, [Legend 240](https://saunafriend.com/packages/harvia-legend-240-wood-sauna-stove), and Legend 300 are black steel frames packed with stones around the fire chamber. Stone mass climbs through the series, from 264 lbs to 440 lbs to 572 lbs.

**HUUM's HIVE line.** The [HUUM HIVE Wood](https://saunafriend.com/packages/huum-hive-wood-sauna-stove) is a stainless steel firebox inside a round cage of stones, in two sizes plus the through-the-wall LS 17. The HIVE Flow and HIVE Flow Mini are built to send more of the heat into the room and less up the chimney, with an octagonal glass door on the firebox.

## Why stone mass changes the feel

The fire heats the stones, the stones heat the air, and the stones hold the heat between loads of wood. Across the families we install, the stone load runs from 66 lbs on the Harvia M3 to 572 lbs on the Legend 300. More stone takes longer to come up and holds steadier, and water on a big stone mass gives a long, soft steam. Less stone answers the fire faster and suits a smaller room. Neither is better. We match the stone mass to the room's volume, its glass, its insulation, and how you plan to use it.

## When does wood make sense over electric?

Choose wood when the room will live outdoors, you want the fire and the work of tending it, and you have wood and a dry place to keep it.

Choose electric when the room is indoors, when you want to set a time and arrive to a hot room, or when nobody in the house wants to tend a fire. A chimney through a finished house is a larger job than one through a sauna roof in the yard.

The [heater guide](https://saunafriend.com/pages/sauna-heater-guide) covers the electric makers beside the wood-fired ones. If you are still deciding between kinds of heat, start with [infrared or traditional](https://saunafriend.com/blog/infrared-or-traditional-how-to-choose-a-home-sauna).

## What we handle

The same list as every heater buildout, with the chimney in place of the electrical line.

- **Site preparation.** Placement in the room, following the manufacturer's specification, with the chimney route and the feeding side decided on the walk.
- **Delivery and placement.** Freight coordination to your site, and the stove placed in the room it heats.
- **Assembly.** The stove installed as part of the sauna build, the chimney kit professionally installed, and the stones loaded.
- **Protection.** Guards and clearances set at install and checked when we come back.
- **First fire.** We light it with you before we leave and show you how to feed it and empty the ash.

**What we confirm on a call.**
Stove size, chimney route, clearances, and ventilation are confirmed during your consultation against the maker's specification and your room. Nothing is ordered before the space has been walked.

## How to start

Call 720.780.4400 for a free estimate, or [have us walk your space](https://saunafriend.com/pages/sanctuary-consultation). A specialist walks the site with you, the room and the heat are settled against it, and member pricing follows from that conversation.

## Frequently asked questions

### How does a wood-fired sauna stove work?

A fire burns in a steel firebox, and the sauna stones packed around or above it take up the heat. The stones heat the air, and water poured on them turns to steam. Smoke leaves through the chimney kit. There is no controller on the stove, so the heat follows the fire you tend.

### Is a wood-fired stove better than an electric heater?

Both get a sauna hot. A wood-fired stove asks for tending, a professionally installed chimney kit, and a dry place to keep the wood. An electric heater runs from a controller, with its electrical work coordinated through licensed electricians. Which fits your site and your habits is a conversation for your consultation.

### Can a wood-fired sauna stove be fed from outside the sauna?

Yes. Harvia's SL and Duo versions and HUUM's LS versions carry a firebox extension through the wall, so firewood goes in from the next room. The Legend, M3, Pro 20, HIVE Wood, and HIVE Flow families each have one, and the choice is settled before the room is framed.

### What comes with a wood-fired stove buildout?

The stove, a professionally installed chimney kit, and the sauna stones, which are included and required. There is no controller. We place the stove, run the chimney, load the stones, and light the first fire with you. Member pricing covers that whole scope of work.
