Traditional vs. Infrared: The Real Difference

It's not just temperature — it's how your body actually responds to the heat. We break down the physiology so you can choose intentionally, not by accident.

⚠️

5 Costly Mistakes Most Buyers Make

Wrong heater type. Misleading "low EMF" claims. Wrong size. Wrong wood. This section alone could save you thousands of dollars and months of regret.

🏡

Featured Models Worth Considering

David's curated shortlist of saunas he'd recommend to his own family — covering traditional, infrared, indoor, and outdoor categories across multiple price points.

The deep heat experience: what traditional sauna really means

Traditional saunas operate at 160–200°F, using heated rocks and steam to create an intensely immersive environment. When water hits the rocks (what Finns call löyly, pronounced "LOY-loo"), the momentary blast of steam engages your entire body in a ritual that's been practiced for over 2,000 years. Here's what separates a great traditional sauna from a mediocre one:

🔥

The Traditional Experience

  • High heat & humidity: 160–200°F with steam from water on hot rocks — intensely cleansing and meditative
  • Löyly ritual: Pouring water on rocks (kiuas) is the heart of Finnish sauna culture — adjusts humidity and temperature on demand
  • Rock capacity matters: 40+ lbs of rocks store heat longer, creating more consistent, even steam and longer sessions
  • Cannot include red light therapy: The extreme heat degrades the therapeutic wavelengths needed for red light to work
  • Best for: The authentic sauna ritual, outdoor installations, wood-fired experiences, and those who want high heat

How It Compares to Infrared

  • Lower temperatures: Infrared operates at 100–145°F, making it accessible for longer sessions and sensitive individuals
  • Direct tissue heating: Infrared wavelengths penetrate 1–2 inches into tissue, heating the body directly — not the air
  • 2–3x more sweat: Infrared produces significantly more sweat at lower ambient temps than traditional sauna
  • Integrates red light therapy: Full-spectrum infrared (near + mid + far) allows red light wavelengths that support skin, joints, and cellular repair
  • Best for: Daily wellness routines, detox, cardiovascular support, and those sensitive to extreme heat

🪵 Thermally Modified Wood: Why It Matters More Than You Think

Most saunas use Western Red Cedar — but premium brands have shifted to thermally modified wood (Thermo-Aspen, Thermo-Spruce) for a very good reason. Heat treatment at 356–482°F in an oxygen-free kiln fundamentally changes the wood's cellular structure.

Why Thermally Modified Wood Wins:

  • Equilibrium moisture content reduced to 4–6% (vs. 12–14% in untreated wood), virtually eliminating warping, cracking, and stave settling
  • Removes hemicellulose — the nutrient fungi rely on — giving it exceptional resistance to rot and decay with zero chemicals
  • Stays dramatically cooler to the touch at high temperatures, making benches and backrests more comfortable
  • Lasts 1.5–2x longer than traditional cedar in outdoor conditions
  • No off-gassing of preservatives or treatments at sauna temperatures

Heater types: wood-fired, electric, and the Saunum system

Your heater is the engine of your sauna. Getting it wrong means hot spots, uneven heat, and a session that never quite feels right. Here are the three main types David recommends understanding before you buy:

🪵
Outdoor · Traditional

Wood-Burning (Kiuas)

The most authentic Finnish sauna experience. Wood-fired heaters require proper chimney installation and ventilation, but reward you with a living, breathing ritual that electric can't replicate. Best for outdoor installations with no electrical access. The crackle of wood and smell of birch smoke are part of the ceremony.

Indoor or Outdoor

Electric (Kiuas)

The most practical choice for permanent indoor or outdoor installations. Key specs: look for at least 6–8kW for a 4-person sauna, and prioritize rock capacity (40+ lbs). More rocks means longer heat retention, more consistent löyly, and sessions that don't drop in temperature when you pour water. Programmable and ready to use within 20–30 minutes.

🌀
Premium Add-on

Saunum Air Circulation

Saunum's patented system addresses one of traditional sauna's biggest comfort issues: the 50°F temperature gap between ceiling and floor. Saunum draws superheated air from the ceiling and mixes it with cooler floor air, distributing heat evenly throughout the sauna — improving comfort, oxygen levels, and breathing. A meaningful upgrade for any serious sauna build.

Lower heat, deeper reach: the science behind infrared

Infrared saunas don't heat the air — they heat you. The wavelengths penetrate 1–2 inches into tissue, stimulating the body at a cellular level in ways that ambient heat simply cannot. This is why many people report stronger therapeutic effects at 120°F in an infrared sauna than they ever experienced in a 200°F traditional session.

🩸

Vasodilation & Circulation

Infrared wavelengths cause blood vessels to dilate, increasing circulation and delivery of oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. This is why infrared saunas are used therapeutically for cardiovascular support, muscle recovery, and joint pain.

🧘

Parasympathetic Activation

Infrared shifts your nervous system from sympathetic ("fight or flight") to parasympathetic ("rest and digest"). This produces measurable improvements in sleep quality, digestion, stress hormone levels, and hormonal balance — effects many users feel within the first few sessions.

💧

EZ Water Production

Dr. Gerald Pollack's research suggests that infrared light supports the creation of "exclusion zone" (EZ) water — a structured H₃O₂ state — inside cells. This fourth phase of water improves cellular function, hydration efficiency, and overall vitality in ways conventional hydration cannot.

Metabolic Activation

Infrared heat raises core body temperature, stimulating mitochondrial activity and triggering heat shock proteins (HSPs). HSPs help repair damaged cellular proteins, support immune function, and have been linked to longevity markers. A single session can elevate metabolic rate for up to two hours post-sauna.

🌊

Meridian Activation

Traditional Chinese Medicine describes a network of meridian channels through which vital energy (qi) flows. Infrared wavelengths align closely with the frequencies that activate these channels — providing a physiological explanation for why infrared sauna often feels profoundly different from simply sitting in a hot room.

💦

2–3× More Sweat

Studies show infrared saunas produce 2–3 times more sweat volume than traditional saunas at comparable session lengths — at far lower ambient temperatures. This makes infrared particularly effective for detoxification and accessible for those who find 200°F environments overwhelming or medically contraindicated.

Chronic illness is no longer just about chemicals in the environment — EMFs, blue light, and constant stress also wreak havoc on our health. An infrared sauna at home can be a powerful, daily step toward functional wellness that most people can actually maintain.

5 costly mistakes most sauna buyers make

David has worked with hundreds of sauna buyers across the Denver metro. These are the five regrets he hears most often — all of which are completely avoidable with the right information upfront.

01

Trusting "Low EMF" Marketing Without Verification

There are zero federal regulations on sauna EMF standards in the U.S. — so "low EMF" can mean almost anything. Ask for actual test data, third-party certification, or a written guarantee. Look for saunas that test below the Swedish Standard (1 mG ELF). Clearlight, for instance, pioneered verifiable low-EMF sauna technology in 2008.

02

Choosing the Wrong Size (The #1 Complaint)

David's number one piece of advice: go bigger than you think you need. The single most common regret from sauna owners is "I wish I'd gotten a bigger one." A sauna you love using alone will eventually become a sauna you want to share. Plan for growth, not just today's lifestyle.

03

Ignoring Wood Quality and Toxic Fumigation

Cheaper saunas often use untreated or chemically fumigated wood that off-gasses at sauna temperatures — directly into your lungs. Premium brands use thermally modified wood (Thermo-Aspen, Thermo-Spruce) with no chemical treatments. Ask for documentation. Companies that source premium wood typically also provide lifetime warranties on the cabin.

04

Overlooking Warranty & Company Stability

Some sauna companies offer impressive lifetime warranties — then vanish within a few years. Research how long the brand has been operating, what their warranty actually covers, and whether there's local support. This is one of the hidden advantages of working with a local sauna contractor like Sauna Friend: someone who will still be available when you need service two years from now.

05

Choosing the Wrong Heater Type for the Space

A poorly positioned heater or underpowered "glorified oven rods" creates hot spots rather than full-body coverage. For traditional saunas, prioritize rock capacity (40+ lbs) and even heat distribution. For infrared, look for full-body heater coverage — back, side, floor, and front — with consistent infrared output across all wavelengths. Half the body coverage means half the benefit.
