Caring for an outdoor sauna through Southern California's marine layer season

What the marine layer does

The marine layer forms when cool, moist air sitting over the Pacific gets trapped against the coast by a temperature inversion, then slides onshore on the sea breeze. That trapped air is ocean-cooled and near-saturated, so it is already close to its own moisture capacity before it reaches a yard at all. From late spring into summer it can park over the coast for days at a stretch, which is where May Gray and June Gloom get their names.

That is a different mechanism from a rainstorm. Rain lands on a surface and then it stops. A marine layer stretch is ambient air staying humid for as long as the pattern holds, whether or not a drop of moisture ever falls.

Weeks without a dry stretch

Inland and at altitude, wood gets intermittent exposure: a storm, then real drying time before the next one arrives. Coastal Southern California under a marine layer pattern does not offer that rhythm. A closed-up coastal home can sit above 60 percent relative humidity, the usual threshold for mold risk, for weeks at a time during a long stretch running from May into summer. A house at least has a roof and, in newer construction, mechanical cooling working against the moisture. An outdoor sauna's exterior cladding has neither, and sits in whatever the marine layer is doing for as long as the pattern holds.

One more detail matters for any sauna within reach of the water: coastal salt is hygroscopic, meaning it actively attracts and holds onto water molecules. That works on the surfaces closest to the ocean on top of whatever the marine layer itself is already doing. Mold can establish within 24 to 48 hours once moisture and an organic surface are both present, and wood is exactly that kind of surface.

Why thermally modified wood fits this exposure

This is where the wood itself matters more than it does in a climate with a genuine dry season. Thermal modification changes the wood before it is ever built into a sauna: a heat treatment alters the cell structure so the material holds less moisture and moves less as humidity rises and falls through the day. On a coastal Southern California placement, that stability is worth paying particular attention to, because the exterior is going to work for a living through months that never quite let it dry out the way a Front Range summer or a Kansas City dry spell would.

• Check the shaded and downwind faces of the sauna more often than the sun-facing ones. They are the last to dry when the marine layer sits in and the first to show mildew.
• Keep the ground around the room clear enough for real airflow. A fence, a hedge, or a wall that blocks the breeze slows the drying the wood is depending on.
• Let the interior breathe fully after a session rather than closing the room up. A room trapping its own humidity on top of a humid exterior is asking twice as much of the wood.

Is marine layer humidity the same problem as coastal salt air?

Related, but not the same problem. Salt air works on hardware, fasteners, and finish, and it is its own line item on a coastal build.
