Barrel sauna, the trim

Boulder County, Colorado

Barrel sauna, the trim · Boulder County, Colorado

Wood moves when the temperature and the moisture around it change, and a Front Range day can do both between morning and night. Over a season that movement works at everything fastened to the wood: the bands on a barrel, the door hinges and latch, the bench screws, the trim. Hardware tight on install day asks to be checked.

In the photograph on this page, two of our crew fasten the end wall trim on a barrel in Boulder County, every fastener snug. The first year tells you which ones want a second look.

Why does wood move so much on the Front Range?

Wood takes on moisture from the air and gives it back, swelling and shrinking as it does. A sauna adds its own cycle: every session the room goes to full heat and back.

Colorado's air is dry, so wood dries further here than near a coast. The altitude sun is stronger and lands hardest on the south and west faces. Then the sun drops and the thin air cools fast. In shoulder season the temperature can cross freezing twice in a day, and a warm week in winter can end in a cold snap. Each swing moves the staves against the bands, the frame against the door, and every screw against the wood that grips it.

Do barrel sauna bands need tightening?

A barrel is a row of staves held in a circle by steel bands. When the staves dry and shrink, the circle gets smaller and a band can go slack. A barrel that went together damp and then sat through a dry Denver summer shows it there first.

Bands are checked and tightened. We publish no amount: the right pull depends on the barrel and the week, and a band pulled hard in the driest week leaves swelling staves nowhere to go. A band you can shift by hand is a reason to call.

A cube has no bands. Its flat walls are staves too, and its glass front sits in a wood frame, so the same movement shows at the door and the trim.

Why does a sauna door stop closing square?

The door is where most members notice movement first. On most of the barrels and cubes we build it is a glass door on hinges in a wood frame, and the glass holds still while the frame moves. When the frame shrinks or swells, the gap around the door, the reveal, changes with it: a door that clicked shut on install day drags on the sill after a dry cold snap, or misses its latch once the frame has swelled. Hinge screws sit in that same moving wood. Caught early, the fix is small: a hinge screw backed out, a latch reset, a door rehung a hair. Left for seasons, a dragging door gets forced.

Benches, trim, roof, and the heater guard

Benches are the hottest wood in the room and the wettest, and their screws live in it. A bench that gives when you sit, or creaks where it did not, is a fastener telling you the wood has moved.

The end wall trim in the photograph is fastened to both the flat end wall and the curved staves, which move at different rates, so trim shows it first: a lifted fastener head, a hairline of daylight at the joint.

Not every barrel ships with shingles or a rain jacket, and without them leaks and warping follow, so the roof covering is settled with the buildout. Every Thermory natural barrel includes its rain jacket.

The heater guard is fastened to the same wood. Guards and clearances are set at install and checked when we come back, and stones settle with use, which is normal.

What thermally modified wood changes, and what it does not

Thermally modified wood, our standing answer for Colorado exposure, is heat treated before it is ever a board, so it moves less through the year and resists decay better than untreated cedar. Less movement means the bands, the frame, and the screws see smaller swings, which is why we make the case for it over cedar on a Colorado barrel.

What it does not change is everything fastened to it. Band, hinge, screw, and oil all live in the same weather. The finish still takes the full altitude sun, its own subject in how altitude changes the exterior wood finish schedule. Slower movement does not take the hardware off the list.

How much outdoor sauna maintenance does Colorado ask for?

Assembly ends with doors, glass, trim, and hardware set and checked, then a first-burn walkthrough. We walk the room with you while everything is right: how the door meets its latch, how a bench feels under weight, how tight the bands are.

Through the first seasons we ask a member to look and listen, after a cold snap and after a hot, dry week. Feel whether the door drags. Press a bench and listen for a new creak. Run a hand over the bands. Look along the trim for a lifted fastener head or daylight at a joint, and at the roof edge for a lifted shingle.

Base, drainage, and snow against a wall are in wood, weather, and the seasons your sauna lives through. The ground moves too: a heaved pad racks the door, the subject of frost heave and the Front Range sauna pad.

What the Protection Service covers

Under the Protection Service, the wood is treated for the exposure it has: sun angle, moisture, wind, and the freeze and thaw cycle it will see year after year. Your specialist sets a maintenance rhythm with you for your site, and where a member would rather not do the follow-up work, we do it. The species choice carries through to the finish schedule.

When to call us

Three things are a call rather than a wait: a door that no longer closes square, a band that has gone slack, and a bench that moves. Members in our service territories get a one-year craftsmanship guarantee and a six-month service guarantee, alongside the manufacturer warranty. Someone still picks up the phone in year three.

How to start

If your sauna is still a plan, have us walk your space and we will talk through the exposure, the wood, and what the first year will ask of the hardware. If the door has already started to drag, call 720.780.4400 and tell us what you are seeing.

Frequently asked questions

Do barrel sauna bands need tightening in Colorado?

Barrel sauna bands are checked and tightened when the staves have shrunk. Steel bands hold the staves in a circle, so when the wood dries the circle gets smaller and a band goes slack. A band you can move by hand is a reason to call, because the right pull depends on the barrel and the week.

Why does my sauna door not close square after the weather changes?

A sauna door stops closing square because the wood frame around the glass moves with temperature and moisture while the glass does not. When the frame shrinks or swells, the gap around the door changes, so the door drags on the sill or misses its latch. The hinge screws carry the door through every swing.

How much maintenance does an outdoor sauna need in Colorado?

An outdoor sauna in Colorado needs a look through the first seasons and a treatment rhythm set for its exposure. After a cold snap or a dry week, feel the door, the benches, and the bands. Whether it needs yearly treatment depends on the wood, the finish, and the exposure, so your specialist sets the rhythm against the site.
